3RD Rock – Austin and Iris Trouser Review

·

Why 3RD Rock? Being Peak District based climbers and hikers, we had heard of them before.

Interestingly, the thought of having designated climbing gear hadn’t occurred to us much; we usually go in our daily Leggings or joggers! In turn, this leads to us often needing to repurchase.

We loved not only the look of the 3RD Rock brand and clothing but also its values (that I’ll get into). A quick reach out to introduce ourselves, and they were interested in a collaboration.

We (Alex – founder) and Joanna (creative director) were excited to receive our Austin and Iris trousers and give you an honest review and some company background. We would never review anything if we couldn’t be 100% transparent and fair about the product. Anyway… Let’s get into the 3RD Rock review.

3RD Rock trousers (Austin and Iris)

Both Joanna and I are very active and outdoorsy. We love mountains, climbing and coffee shops. We were excited to try these trousers and tell you what we think. Let’s get into each pair and see how they perform.

Before we review, if you fancy checking out 3RD Rock’s site, you can find them here.

Men’s Austin Trouser

Firstly let’s look at the Austin trouser from 3RD Rock. My first impressions of these were when we took them out to the Roaches in the Peak District. They were very comfy and stretchy, which is perfect for climbing. Especially considering the awkward positions, we get ourselves in.

Being 5’10, I got the regular leg trouser which was slightly too long for me, but that wasn’t a big issue as I just rolled them up slightly, which I liked the look of. Other than that, the fit was great and felt perfect around the waist.

I tested these trousers for their performance in various situations over a few days. This included a snowy peak district hike, some bouldering, a nice relaxing dog walk, a lovely coffee date with my amazing girlfriend and OA’s creative director Joanna, and a lot of indoor climbing!

I found they performed well overall. They didn’t look out of place in any situation, including the less outdoorsy coffee shop trip! With the indoor climbing, their performance was good. However, as someone who runs quite hot, I overheated pretty quickly. This isn’t ideal, but outdoor trousers are good as they keep you warm when resting or on a belay. When climbing outdoors, I found them to be perfect for me. Keeping me warm in between attempts and stretchy enough to give no restriction.

I am a fan of these trousers and will wear them regularly as my outdoor climbing trouser. I will be adding some other 3RD rock items to my wardrobe.

Pros

Comfy

Splash resistant

Versatile

4-way stretch; perfect for awkward positions

Cons

May be too warm for an intense climbing session indoors!

Women’s Iris Trouser

For me – Joanna – the women’s Iris trouser is a must-have! And honestly, I’m shocked I didn’t even realise a trouser this versatile existed.

I tend to look for something relatively fashionable as well as practical. I’ve refrained from many ‘women’s outdoor trousers’ as they often don’t fit correctly around the waist or have baggy areas around the knees or ankles, which is a problem that these trousers don’t have.

I’m sure women can agree when I say pockets don’t exist for us! Again, this is no issue with 3rd rock. The Iris trouser has front and back pockets, easily fitting a whole hand in and more! This includes a zipped pocket (I know, I couldn’t believe it either) at the back!

Aside from the aesthetics, the confidence gained from wearing these allowed me to reach a higher grade indoors than before! And as mentioned above, they performed well in a social setting and received many compliments.

The trousers are a touch on the pricey side; however, given the sustainable values of 3RD Rock, the high-quality trouser and the performance they allow for, this is worth it! They’re durable, extremely comfortable, flattering and Stretchy, allowing every movement from those high squat moves to a bloated post-dinner belly!

Pros

Breathable

Flattering

Versatile

Shower resistant for all my tears

Cons

The waist fits a bit loose (For above average hip to waist ratio)

3RD Rock

3RD Rock is a Derbyshire based clothing company designing clothes for active people to use while doing activities, but also stylish so they can be worn out and not look out of place. Their website has a vast selection of products, from t-shirts to trousers.

Founded in 2010 by climber and fashion designer Jessica Mhari Mor, 3RD Rock is a family ran business. Their core values are sustainability, good ethics and quality clothing for active people, which we love.

I started 3RD ROCK because I needed to make useful clothing that is worn to death and that is respectful to the planet and its inhabitants. – Jessica Mhari Mor

With the current state of the world, sustainability is super important to protect our home—especially outdoor types as that’s where we love to be. Choosing sustainable brands is a big step in the right direction for the planet we love.

In conclusion, Joanna and I are incredibly impressed with these trousers and company. We recommend them and love what they stand for, so please head over to the 3RD Rock site to find your perfect fit. Be sure to use code: JOANM5 for a discount at the checkout.
