Rock climbers are a specific group. This makes us reasonably easy to buy for; I can give you some good suggestions that I know your friend/ family. It won’t even cost that much to keep them happy. As a climber, I feel confident writing this post and hopefully getting some great gifts for my fellow climbers.
Gifts for rock climbers
We will get into these gifts if you get anything on this list. I hope that your family or friend loves it. Anyway, I know you aren’t here for my talking, but you want some great gift ideas for climbers.
I will make a general list of products all rock climbers will enjoy. Some may be specific to a subsection of climbing, such as Trad, Sport or Bouldering gifts.
A New (or extra) Mat
As a rock climber, you always seem to need another mat. They may not have one yet, but they want to start climbing outdoors.
Whether it’s a long traverse or a highball route, the more mats, the more comfortable you will be. The more comfortable, the more chance you’ll send that sketchy move on the problem they have been working on.
One great thing about getting a climbing mat is there is a good chance that your friend or family won’t care about brand shape or size. They will just be grateful that they have an extra mat for protection.
Mats can be a bit pricey; they start at £150 unless you can find a sale. There are also a lot of options. I have a more in-depth post about some of the best bouldering mats. Buy any on that list, and I promise your friend/ family will be happy.
Cams/nuts
This is specific to trad climbers only. If your friend is a climber, ensure that they do trad before you buy them this. Unless you get it with the following idea (No.3). Unlike gift 1, your friends/ family are possibly quite specific on what brand/ type they want.
So you may want to look at what they have or casually ask, “What trad gear is best” I’m sure they will give you an extensive list of what they like. They may also give you some other ideas as well. They know what they want, so trust them, and don’t go cheap.
For boulders, maybe a trad/ sport course (if they are interested)
Your boulder friend may be interested in giving Sports or Trad climbing. This will be a little more of an expensive gift, so this is for people who like their mates. This will be meaningful, and I promise they will love it. They may have a guide they like and want a session with him, so you could write in a card that you will pay for it, or if you don’t mind, you could reach out to someone yourself and get it all sorted for them.
I know I would prefer someone to give me a budget to buy a course—that way, I can find an instructor I like. I wouldn’t be annoyed or upset if it were already bought and paid for.
Rock Climbing sessions
A lot of climbing gyms offer vouchers. If you’re reading this, your mate is a climber and will probably already have a membership at a gym. However, I guarantee there will be another local gym they occasionally like to go to. You can most likely go online to buy them, but you may have to call them or go into the gym to sort it out.
For instance, my friends and I often climb at Substation Macclesfield; we occasionally go to depot Manchester. We’re not members at Depot, so we pay as we go. Getting a gift card to cover a session there would be nice.
Chalk
This is a single one; get them a bag of excellent chalk. Some climbers have a brand they prefer, but most people don’t care. As I said, like, so they’ll be happy to have a top-up of chalk. This is an excellent gift as it is a lot more budget-friendly.
8b plus chalk bag
Unless your friend is new to rock climbing, they will likely have a chalk bag. However, an 8B chalk bag is something a bit different. They may not have it as their daily bag, but I assure you they will love it. As you can see from the photos, this brand makes some amazing-looking chalk bags (they’re high quality too). I know many people who have them, and they love them.
An action camera
This doesn’t have to be a GoPro, as they are expensive and very affordable. Using a phone camera is alright indoors, but this could easily break when outdoors. Having an action cam set up that you can just hit record when you are ready to send a route is handy. It is also suitable as you save your phone from dying due to using it a lot to record. You could quickly get into a lousy situation outdoors, so having a phone with a charge is vital.
I hope that you were able to find some gifts for rock climbers in this post. I put some effort into finding products to suit all types of climbers to suit your friend’s needs ideally.
