In my time climbing, I have not come across a climbing shoe better suited to beginners than the La Sportiva tarantula and tarantulace (the laced version). Whenever I get asked about a first shoe, this is always my recommendation. I’ll also recommend trying shoes on before you buy, but that’s another posy.
As a beginner, you want a simple all-around shoe that won’t break the bank. That is the La Sportiva tarantula the RRP is £85. Compared to the more advanced shoes that are upwards of £150, 85 isn’t that bad. Furthermore, as a beginner, you’ll most likely be sticking indoors for a bit at least. As someone who climbs 3-4 times per week, a pair of shoes that I solely use for indoor climbing would probably last me 6+ months. Compared to 2-3 times if I just use them to climb outdoors. So if you look at it like that, £85 isn’t that bad. Additionally, if you find them on sale, I have seen them for as little as £65 which is a steal. Anyway, let’s look at the shoe and give you a bit of advice for buying your first pair along with why these are my go-to recommendations for beginners.
Specifications
I’m not going to go crazy on the specs, but let’s see what these shoes are made up of and break each part down to make it easier to understand.
- Upper: Slip lasted, suede leather
- Lining, Posterior: none, anterior Pacific (controlled deformation insert)
- Fit: Medium
- Midsole: LaSpoFlex 1,8mm complete
- Sole: FriXion RS 4mm
- Sizes: 33-48 half sizes included
- Weight: 480g, EU 39
Closure System:
- The tarantula features a Velcro closure system, making it easy to get your shoe on or off or make it tighter and looser without the need for laces. Alternatively, the taranturlace features a lacing system, this is great for making the shoe fit your feet snugly and well. Velcro or lace is down to personal preference. I have used both and personally prefer Velcro, but I’m sure you will find what you prefer in time.
Material:
- The shoe is made from leather and synthetic materials. Leather provides durability and comfort, while synthetic materials add flexibility and help the shoe maintain its shape.
Sole:
- The sole is made of FriXion RS 4mm rubber. These soles provide a good grip on climbing surfaces, helping you maintain traction on the rock or climbing wall.
Rand (Rubber on the Toe):
- The toe of the shoe has a rubber rand. This protects your toes and enhances the shoe’s durability, especially in areas prone to wear.
Shape:
- The Tarantula has a neutral shape. This means the shoe doesn’t force your foot into an aggressive, downturned position, making it more comfortable for climbing. For beginners, you don’t need something aggressive, or to downsize lots. It needs to be comfortable but snug. If it’s painful try half a size bigger, but bear in mind the shoe will stretch once broken in.
Usage:
- This shoe is versatile and suitable for various climbing activities, including indoor climbing, sport climbing, and entry-level bouldering.
Sizing:
- La Sportiva uses European sizing for their shoes. It’s important to find the right size to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. Keep in mind that climbing shoes often have a snug fit, but don’t let someone convince you to downsize massively to the point of pain.
Conclusion
In summary, the La Sportiva Tarantulas is a versatile climbing shoe perfect for beginners and intermediate climbers. It provides a comfortable fit with a Velcro (or lacing if you go for the taranturlace) system. This has a durable construction with leather and synthetic materials and features a FriXion RS 4mm rubber sole. The neutral shape makes it comfortable for beginner climbers who are looking to get more into climbing.
