Lake District Mountains and Full list of the Wainwrights

·

People often think of the 214 Wainwright when discussing the Lake District mountains. The 214 peaks described in Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume pictorial guide to the lake district are Wainwright’s Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume pictorial guide to the lake district. We are going to cover the Lake District mountains.

In the United Kingdom, a mountain is most commonly defined as a landform that rises at least 610 metres (2,000 feet) above sea level. Going off this number, we can see that out of the 214 peaks, only 127 actual mountains are in the Lake District National Park.

I’ve not climbed all of them, and to write about every single one would take way too long. I will list them all here, but what I will talk about in this post will be the four Lake district Peaks over 914m (3000ft). The “real Lake District Mountains”, some people say. These are; Skiddaw at 931m (3053 ft), Helvellyn at 950m (3118 ft), Scafell at 964m (3162 ft), and Scafell Pike at 978m (3210 ft).

There are two other peaks in the Lake District that some people consider mountains, and others disagree, saying they are subsidiary peaks and not actual mountains. Broad crag at 933m (3064 ft) and Symonds Knott at 959m (3146 ft). For the sake of argument, I thought I would mention them, but I have left them off the list for now (I may add them in the future). I haven’t been to either, so I am unsure what to think or write.

I will start with the smallest of the four Skiddaw working my way up to the largest Mountain in the Lake District, Scafell Pike (978m or 3210ft).

Skiddaw

Skiddaw (931 m) is a famous Lake District mountain just north of Keswick in the Northern Fells. Whether you count the two mentioned above, this is England’s fourth or 6th largest mountain.

I believe Skiddaw is such a famous mountain for a few reasons. The size is one for sure, and it is one of the larger mountains in the lakes. It is also so close to the famous town of Keswick. More accommodation in this area means you can stay close to it. Finally, one popular route is going up the mountain’s southern side, a steep path, and no technical ability is needed to climb it.

The mountain also has beautiful views of Keswick and Derwent Water.

Helvellyn

Helvellyn is a 950m mountain in the Eastern Fells of the lake district near Ambleside, but the main routes upstart from near Ullswater. I do have to say that climbing this was one of my favorites I have done to date.

Now, I think every single hiker in the UK has heard of this one, not because of the summit alone or the stunning views, but for the famous Striding Edge. Helvellyn Via Striding Edge is arguably one of the most famous climbs in England. The grade one scramble up Helvellyn is a fun and challenging climb.

I have done this hike and written about my time climbing via Striding Edge and descending via Swirral Edge.

Scafell and Scafell Pike

Scafell 964m and Scafell Pike 978m come as a pair. If you do one, you do the other. You can probably tell by the names that they are situated right next to each other and are separated by Mickledore Col.

Scafell and Scafell Pike are located in Southern Fells of the lake district, near Wastwater. Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and part of the three national peaks. This includes Ben Nevis in Scotland and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) in North Wales.

Here is some more information on the hike up Scafell and Scafell Pike.
