6 Tips for travelling to Switzerland (Zermatt)

·

We recently took a trip to Switzerland, specifically Zermatt, the beautiful mountain town overlooked by the famous Matterhorn mountain. We had a magical time there and we wish we didn’t have to leave. However, if you are planning a trip there, we wanted to give you some advice and tips to help you on your travels.

Watch Your Luggage on the Train

One important tip to keep in mind when travelling to Zermatt by train is to avoid putting your luggage on the holders of the train. As you ascend towards Zermatt, you might see a pile-up of luggage in the aisle, which can cause inconvenience to passengers and potentially break your belongings. Instead, we recommend keeping your luggage close to avoid any potential issues.

Invest in a Swiss Travel Pass

If you plan on travelling around Switzerland and to Zermatt, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass. This pass provides access to a variety of transportation modes, including trains, buses, and boats. Not only does this pass to save you money on travel costs, but it also includes entry to over 500 museums and exhibitions across the country. It doesn’t cover things like the Gornergrat and Glacier Paradise in Zermatt, however, it does discount them.

Plan and Book Ahead

Everything in Zermatt and Switzerland is expensive, so planning and booking ahead is important to save money. Last-minute bookings can result in additional costs, so consider planning your itinerary. This can help you find affordable accommodations, activities, and transportation options to make your trip more budget-friendly. However, certain activities heavily rely on the weather, so make sure you read everything and can get a refund, or you’ll have to wait till the day off to book.

Be Careful About Tap Water

In some restaurants in Zermatt, you may be charged for tap water. This can be a surprise for some travellers, so it’s important to check before ordering. To avoid any additional costs, consider carrying a reusable water bottle with you during your trip… Or just get the wine as it was the same price for a glass.

Trains in Geneva Can Be Unpredictable

Be aware that train schedules can be unpredictable. It’s important to check the train schedule in advance and plan your travel accordingly. We still had a huge mishap with the train to the airport and had to change platforms 4 times.

Consider Apartment Hotels for Affordable Dining Options

Food costs in Zermatt can be high, but you can save money by choosing an apartment hotel that has a kitchenette. This allows you to cook your meals instead of eating out for every meal, which can add up quickly. This can be a great option for those travelling on a budget or wanting to experience local cuisine without breaking the bank.
